As I said before, simply having a leadership title in one of your extracurriculars is not enough (most high-achievinghigh school students have a leadership role in an extracurricular), you need to be a leader who makes an impact. What Is Impact? Impact is making a real difference: leading your club to raise $5,000 for breast cancer research, leading your team as captain to the national championship, leading your club to collect 1,000 cans of food to donate to your local food back, etc. In general, your impact should be measurable by a number amount (i.e. $1,000 raised or 500 students attended the event) or by meeting a big goal (i.e. getting to the state or national level of competition). You should be able to say, "Under my leadership, the student council raised $5,000 to make prom free for all students" or "Under my leadership, our math team went from not making the regional competition to winning the state championship." It's important to show impactbecause, as I mentioned above, most high-achieving high school students will have some leadership role on their application. Not many students will have made a true impact.Impact is difficult to achieve, but I will guide you through the process in the steps below. You want to stand out from other applicants! What Are Ivy League Schools Looking For? If you’re hoping to attend an Ivy League school, I recommend that you tryto get leadership experience in your main area of interest. What do I mean by that?The Ivy League no longer wants well-rounded students (who do varied activities such as tennis, drama, student government, and volunteering at an animal shelter). By participating in such a wide range of activities, very, very selective colleges (the Ivy League and Stanford) may see your well-roundedness as a lack of focus. The Ivy League schools want experts.They want students who specialize in one general area.For example, if your passion is drama, you should join the drama club, do regional theater, compete in the drama categories with your speech and debate team, write an original play, and/or volunteer with a children’s theatergroup.Specializing in one area doesn’t mean only doing one activity. If drama is your focus, don’t just be an inactive member of your drama club. You need to do more than that to impress the Ivy League. As I said above, you need to make an impact. Whatever one thing you choose to be an expert in,I recommend you also try to become a leaderin that field.If you’re a number 1 ranked tennis player, consider trying to run for team captain at your school,founding a club to teach children how to play tennis, and hosting a tennis competition to raise money for breast cancer.If you’re a mathlete, consider running for a mathlete board position, holding a Pi day fundraiser for charity where you sell pies, and starting a club to help students with their math homework. Whether or not you’re hoping to attend an Ivy League school, you should still try to showleadership and make an impact in your extracurriculars. If you’re not gunning for the Ivy League, you don’t have to worry about focusing on one area of expertise.However, you still need leadership experience because it’s impressive to all colleges, and, as I said before, it can help you get accepted or make up for another area of your application if it isn't quite as strong as you'd like it to be. Which way do you go to get leadership experience? How Can You GetLeadership Experience? If colleges want to see meaningful leadership experience, you should try to get it! Buthow can you become a leader?Your first thought might be to think of traditional high school leadership activitiessuch as being on student council. Student council is not necessarily the best leadership experience for all applicants.There are many other ways to showleadership. Below, I give you my top four options: Option #1: Become a Board Member, Club President, or Team Captain You can become club president or team captain by getting good at whatever the main club activity is, cultivating relationships with teammates or other club members, and doing more work than is just required. Show that you're willing to do more work than expected by offering to help with the events (come early, help with set up/organizing, help with clean up, etc.). Don’t expect to become club president immediately as a freshman.I recommend you try to work your way up to becoming a top leader in the club. Start in a smaller position such as secretary or treasurer your freshman or sophomore year, and then move up to vice president and then to president. All during this time you need to be making relationships with teammates or club members and showyou're willing to work hard. That was my strategy to become my high school’s student government president, and it worked! Option #2: Starta New Club in Your Area of Interest Before founding a new club, brainstorm what you'd want that club to be, come up with ideas for what the club's purpose would b,e andtalk to people with similar interests to see if they'd be interested in the club. If you’re nervous or unsure about starting a new club, consider first trying to plan a new event or project for an existing club.For example, if a math club exists, consider planning an event at which the math club offers free tutoring to other students struggling with math.If your planned event goes well, you’ll feel that much more confident and ready to start your own club. Option #3: Lead a Project in Your Area of Interest Before leading a project, you should help a current club or charity plan an event or host a fundraiser. That way you can learn how to organize a successful event or fundraiser. You'll see how that person did it, get advice, and see how successful they are. Talk to classmates about what kind of fundraiser they'd enjoy, and see if any classmates would be interested in helping you. Option #4: Increase Participation inan Activity In order to make a real impact, I'd suggest trying to get the number of participants or attendees for a club, fundraiser, or similar event above 50 (100 or more is better). Before you attempt to increase participation, you need to see how that event or club runs. Offer to help the person currently responsible for planning that event or the person who is responsiblefor club recruitment. See what they do that works and what they do that doesn't. Ask people who attend club events what they liked, disliked, and what suggestions they have for improvement. Take all of this into consideration when trying to increase participation in a club or event. DISCLAIMER: I do recommend joining student council if that’s your â€Å"expertise.† If you’re hoping to be a political science major in college and want to be a politician someday, go ahead and join student council and make that your â€Å"expertise.† If you need advice on how to run for student council, check out our other article. However, don’t just join student council to add to your list of extracurriculars and to make yourself seem like a leader. How Should YouDecideWhich Leadership ActivitiestoDo? I've listed a whole bunch of options above, but which should you do?Take the time to make a list of all the potential leadership opportunities in your area of interest.Check out my examples to help get started: Expertise: Film Potential Leadership Roles: Become a board member of the film club that currently exists at my school. I like foreign films. I’m going to create a foreign film club where we watch a new foreign film every week and discuss it. I am going to start a donation drive where I collect people’s old VHSs and DVDs (along with DVD and VHS players) and donate them to a local hospital so the patients will have movies to watch. Expertise: Art Potential Leadership Roles: Become a board member of the art club that currently exists at my school. Host a student art sale at a local gallery to raise money for breast cancer. Organize and teach a weekly painting class at a local nursing home. Expertise: Science Potential Leadership Roles: Compete in ScienceOlympiad. Organize and teach a weekly science class after school to elementary school students. Start a robotics club or team. Expertise: Politics Potential Leadership Roles: Compete on the debate team. Join the school newspaper and start a political column. Start a Democrat/Republican/Independent club or a general politics club. I’d recommend trying to come up with at least three ideas, but five or moreis ideal.Why do you need so many ideas?Not all ideas will be winners. You need to analyze what you’re most interested in doing and what’ll be impressive to colleges. What will be impressive to colleges?A leadership experience in which you’re active and made a tangible difference. As I said before, you need to have impact, and it should be measurable and make a tangible difference. For my collection drive idea (in the film section), while it might work, I may not be able to collect all that many Blu-Rays, DVDs and VHSs as many people are now just buying films through Apple TV/Roku.If I only collect 20 movies, that will not be very impressive to colleges and will not make a tangible difference. However,if I do decide to do the drive and manage to collect 1,000 movies, that’s a tangible difference. Try to narrow your choices down to 1 or 2 that you know you’re passionate about and that you know will be impressive to colleges. Tips on How to Follow Through WithYour LeadershipActivity Once you narrow down your choices to the final one or two that you’ll do, how should you go about actually developingyour leadership in these areas?I recommend writing down what you plan to do on a piece of paper and putting it somewhere important (like your desk) where you’ll see it every day, so it’ll keep you motivated.Tell your parents/guardians about your goal. They’ll be impressed, and you’ll be more motivated now that they know your plan. Create a timeline of goals or an action plan to meet in order to execute your plans.Start with today (whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior)Create actionable goals for today. Make these something you can do rightnow:â€Å"I’ll join the math club.† Create goals for later this year.Once you join some organization(s), youcan then start looking for or creating leadership opportunities: "I'm going to run for math club treasurer." Next, create goals for next year (and every year you have left of high school) to build on that initial leadership experience and expand your impact.â€Å"I’ll run for math club president, and I’ll start a charity drive for graduating seniors to donate their calculators to students who can’t afford one. I’ll recruit other math club members to spread the word about the calculator donation drive by making announcements in their classes and giving fliers to their teachers to put up in their classrooms.† Why is creating a timeline oraction plan important?It’s easy to procrastinate and avoid taking the leap to becoming a leader.It can feel daunting. It’s hard to imagine being elected president of a club when you’re not even a member yet or when you haven’t held a position or planned an event.However, your action plan should show you that your goal is achievable! You just need to take the appropriate small steps to get there. How to Include Leadership Experience on College Applications On your college applications, you’ll be able to list your leadership experience under extracurricular activities. You’ll only have 150 characters to describe your activities, so use those words wisely. With these 150 characters, you should try to describe what you did in your leadership role (what events did you plan/run), and describe your impact(how much did you fundraise, how many people showed up to your event).You will not be able to use complete sentences! Start with an action verb such as created, executed, planned, or developed.Here are some examples: Extracurricular: President of the Foreign Film Club Description: Founded club, grew to 15 members, raised $5000 to direct foreign film, won 1st prize at local film festival. Extracurricular: President of the Art Club Description: Doubled membership from 20 to 40 members, raised $2000 for brain tumor research through a student art sale. Extracurricular: Speech Debate Competitor Description: Placed 1st in the Blue Key Speech and Debate tournament in Congress competition 3 years in a row. The whole of this scene should be spoken not to loud but not to quiet because it is so early in the morning that it is dark, and everyone in the castle apart from them two is asleep. Macbeth then starts to tell Lady Macbeth that he heard the two guards and other voices praying and talking to him, Theres one did laugh ins sleep, and one cried murder! he is telling Lady Macbeth about his hearings in this quote. Lady Macbeth believes him but does not want him to develop on these thoughts and move on, consider it not so deeply. She is now telling him to move on to another subject and carry on as normal. She could be a bit worried about her husband Macbeth, these deeds must not be thought she is worried that he is dwelling on this subject too much for his and her own good, it will make us mad. This sentence is very ironic because in the later stages of the play it comes true, this comes true because lady Macbeth goes around washing her hands thinking there is blood on them but there actually isnt. This ends in her committing suicide. She could also be trying to comfort him, What do you mean? she could be trying to get all of his bad feelings out of him and out in the open so she can deal with him. This could also lead to it being easier for her to manipulate him by exploiting his weaknesses. The stronger character in this scene and the whole time she is in the play is Lady Macbeth in the way she controls her whole surroundings to the way she wants, these deeds must not be thought in this part of the play she is in controlling she is literally telling him what to think. There is a great warrior who has killed many in battle is putty in his wives hands, she can mould him into feeling and doing what she wants. Macbeth starts to show a little amount of backbone in the middle of the scene, Ill go no more. This is when he confronts her and tells her he wont do anymore when she tells him to put the daggers back and smear the blood on the guards. Earlier at the beginning of the scene when Macbeth returns from the murder of the king he brings back two crucial pieces of evidence that links them to the murder. The plan was to kill the king with the guards daggers and return the daggers after smearing the blood on the two guards to frame them. He does all of this apart from the returning the daggers. When Lady Macbeth realises this she is furious,Infirm of purpose! She raised her voice severely, to prove how angry she is. She is saying to him that he cant do the simple job he was told to do. So because of this fault it looks like the guards are innocent and they wanted to frame them. When Lady Macbeth goes to return the daggers this shows us she is not a normal women in accordance to those times, Ill gild the faces of the grooms withal this shows us she is not afraid to stare In the face of death and smear the faces of the guards which she has manipulated her husband to do. This is very strange because when this play was made the country was a very Christian and to murder a man in cold blood was a very serious offence let alone blame the murder on his own guards. Lady Macbeth is not a normal as we know because earlier in the play when we first see her in act 1 scene 5 she calls upon evil spirits to make her more of a man than a woman. When Lady Macbeth returns from smearing the blood on the guards she says, A little water clears us of this deed. She is basically saying that all it needs is a little bit of water to clean their hands then they are in the clear of the murder. This sentence is also ironic because when Lady Macbeth gets mentally ill in the later stages of the play she thinks her hands have blood on them so she continually washes them thinking the blood is still there even though there is none there. The way that Lady Macbeth is portrayed throughout the whole play from Act 1 scene 5 till she commits suicide is she is an opportunist; she sees the opportunity that Macbeth can become king so she pushes him and manipulates him to think he is the rightful king. She will also do anything to be crowned queen alongside him. She is also shown as very devious and a manipulator this is shown as she controls the best Scottish warrior is like a dog and she is the owner she tells him what to do and he does it, or a puppet master and the puppet. You are sitting in your living room at home watching the nightly news. The lead story for the night is about a family of four that were murdered. After seeing and hearing about something like that we often ask ourselves, What could possess a person enough to kill another human being? What is it that drives a person to kill? Will we ever know? Many authors use this unique mentality in short stories. They write about what the killer thinks and how he/she acts on his/her thoughts. One of these stories is â€Å"A Good Man Is Hard To Find†, by Flannery O’Connor. In this story O’Connor’s victim, The Misfit, is an escaped convict. He was in the Federal Penitentiary for killing his father. Throughout the story O’Connor builds up this killers mentality through his words and body language. Like many other murderers, The Misfit could not distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When The Misfit first comes in contact with the family he immediately becomes nervous. He looks at the grandmother and says, â€Å"Would you mind calling them children to sit down by you? Children make me nervous† (O’Connor 687). The Misfit shows that he is obviously not comfortable being with or around children. The Misfit continues to watch all of the family members, like a hawk eyeing up his prey. The reality of the situation is that the children are very scared of The Misfit, and in no physical way could they harm him. The Misfit’s fantasy or conscience tells him that the children will do something wrong if he doesn’t watch them carefully. His thoughts of fantasy take over and the children huddle around their grandmother, shaking with fear.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Just moments after his first interaction with the family, the grandmother said something that The Misfit did not like. Christian Tradition course exposed me to the Christian Tradition based on Biblical and church history. The course taught me the differences and similarities of Christian Tradition from other major world religions. I learned about the significance of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Trinity based on the teachings of the Bible. The course also briefly covered 2,000 years of church history but with emphasis on the impact of the Council of Nicea, Council of Chalcedon, and John and Charles Wesley on Christianity. The professor emphasized the importance of the reformation that sparked a revolution in the church. The course began by distinguishing Christianity from other major world religions both in similarities and differences. Major religions included Judaism, Buddhism, and Taoism just to name a few. All religions are similar in that they believe in a higher power. They have doctrines and teachings about salvation and a code of conduct for living. Christianity is unique in that the people believe in theism. Theism is the belief that God created the world and actively rules over and cares for the world. Christians also believe in deism which is the belief that God is absent in the world that he created but allows his creation to develop with direct interference and no revelation or miracles. Another belief that makes Christianity special is the belief in pantheism. Pantheism is the belief that God and nature is one and the same. All these distinctions make Christianity the most unique religion compared to other major religions. The course emphasized the significance of God. God created the earth, heavens and living creatures of the world. God also created the first people on earth, Adam and Eve who bought sin into the world. God is father to his children or people that believe in him. He is caring, eternal and infinite. He asks us to trust him and ask him for forgiveness when we sin. His forgiving ways are revealed in Genesis 3 when he looks for Adam and Eve after they ate the forbidden apple. He still seeks to have a relationship with them even though they sinned. God â€Å"banished him from the Garden of Eden† (Genesis 3:23) in order to discipline them out of love and for Adam and Eve’s own sake so they can’t eat from the tree of life. We know God through his blessings and good intentions. He wants the best for his  children and does everything out of love. Jesus is God’s son that was sent to earth to be crucified on the cross for the people’s sins. The reason for his birth is because of all the corruption and evil of the people. Jesus is significant in that he is the answer to salvation and entrance to heaven. Jesus is the Messiah and also claims his own coming as the Messiah in the New Testament. The people’s faith in Jesus promises rescue and the key to heaven. Without the death and resurrection of Jesus, the prophecy of the Messiah could not be fulfilled and mans’ destiny would remain a mystery. Jesus refers to himself as â€Å"the light of the world† (John 8:12) because darkness does not lie within him. Jesus is God in human form because Jesus possesses human characteristics in the Bible. Jesus faced temptation, vulnerability and hunger when Satan tried to seduce Jesus to sin in Matthew 4. His significance is observed on Christmas which marks the birth of Jesus of Nazareth in the city of Bethlehem . The third existence of God is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth, love, life and power. He is co-existent, co-eternal, and co-equal with God and Jesus. The Holy Spirit is sent by God through Jesus to reprove the world of sin and prepare the church for Christ’s return. Jesus said before he ascends into Heaven that he will send the Comforter and Counselor. The Holy Spirit enters our hearts when we think about a truth. He is the spirit of God and his role is to guide us to on the path to God. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit together are called the Trinity. The Trinity describes the three-in-one unity of three person joined by the closest ties of love and common purpose to appear as one. The role of the father is sovereign king and eternal lover of our souls. The role of the son or Jesus is the savior and teacher. The role of the Holy Spirit is the empowerer and evangelist. All these roles combined equal a mystical element that describes the Trinity or another name is Godhead. To understand the Trinity, God is the sun that shines while Jesus is the rays of the sun and the Holy Spirit is the warmth that is felt from the sun. All personalities are equal and combined together called the Trinity. The role and purpose of the Church is to create a community of people who believe in the same faith of God. The Church is a foundation of the faith in God. The Church allowed people to unite on common grounds and follow the words of God. The place of worship made people feel accountable because they were in it together. The Church raised the importance of prayer and spirituality because that is how one communicates to God. The Church emphasizes fellowship, dedication to the faith, selflessness. The Church gives power to the Christian people because they are a group and not individuals anymore. One of the most important events in church history includes the Council of Nicea. The First Council of Nicea happened in 325 and involved the first gathering of Christian bishops and the Roman Empire not as enemies but as allies. The bishops wanted to solve the dispute over Arianism. Arianism is the belief that Christ was more than human but something less than God. Arianism taught the people that Jesus was created being subordinate to God while the bishops believed Jesus was fully divine and fully human at the same time. The Emperor Constantine summoned the Council of Nicea in order to agree on a universally accepted definition of Jesus Christ. As it turned out, the gathering did not settle the disagreement between the Arianist and the bishops for another century they battled for supremacy. It wasn’t until the Council at Chalcedon in today’s Turkey that the church fathers concluded that Jesus was completely and fully God. They decided that this â€Å"this total man and this total God was one completely normal person† (1990, Shelley, p. 11). Jesus unites two personality and characters of human and divine into one person. The Council of Chalcedon established an agreement of who Jesus is. â€Å"Jesus was a normal being, bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, he could fulfill every demand of God’s moral law, and he could suffer and die a real death† (1990, Shelley, p. 11). On the other hand, since he is also God, Jesus’s death on the cross was capable of fulfilling Godly righteousness. The Council of Chalcedon was possible as a result of the first Council of Nicea. The Council of Nivea paved the way for the orthodox or conventional understanding of Jesus Christ. The Reformation began after Johann Guttenberg invented printing from movable type. His new process sparked a revolution in society and in the church because books were produced in large numbers and at lower prices. Literacy and education spread as more Bibles were printed, as more people became readers and as readers demanded more books. As a result, not only did scholars and monks have access to a Bible, the common people did as well. In the Church, Gutenberg’s invention made the Reformation possible because the Reformation was in some ways a battle of books and pointing out errors in someone else. The Reformation began in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. Martin Luther was a former monk who demanded for radical changes in the corrupted church. He was against the church who granted forgiveness called indulgences in return for monetary sacrifices from the people. Luther believed baptism is the only indulgence necessary for salvation and trusting in God alone will save oneself. He basically said indulgences do not remove guilt, Pope could not God, and the Pope could only ask for his own forgiveness. Luther eventually attacked the church with his Ninety-Five Theses that described all the wrong doings of the church. Luther represented Christian freedom and the courage to â€Å"honor no power other than the power of the Word of God† (1990, Gritsch, p. 37). Luther was the catalyst that bought on a chain reaction of events that tore Western Europe away from the Roman Catholic Church. The Reformation shattered the long-established unity of Western Europe and spread into smaller and reformed religious groups. The Reformation marked the recruitment of Protestantism such as Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, and Anabaptist to name a few. If not for the Reformation, people today would all be Roman Catholic who is ruled by the Pope and there would not be denominations in the Church. There would not be a Bible present in schools or homes and scripture would not be taught. The Reformation basically spitted the Church and its impact was drastic in the Christian Tradition. John and Charles Wesley were two ordained ministers whose conversion to the faith has made a great impact of Christianity. John and Charles Wesley were  brothers who lived by good works and not by faith in Jesus until they converted. John experienced a personal conversion within himself after his trip from Georgia when he felt his heart warmed. Charles experienced Pentocost on May 21, 1738 and documented his experience in his journal that the Spirit of God â€Å"chased away the darkness of my disbelief† (1990, Green, p. 44). Charles wrote six to seven-thousand hymns and preached over 40,000 sermons to lay people such as coal miners and commissioners. The Wesley brother’s lives continued to affect the church such as the Methodist denominations that was still comprised of Wesley’s teachings. Their teachings emphasized upon preaching, benefit of small prayer groups that called attention to accountability and community, and the concern for the poor and oppressed people. John and Charles highlighted the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer and the church. They stressed the importance of literature and education in the common man and even formed many colleges and seminaries. One great example is the Eastern Nazarene College which is a Wesleyan educational school. Overall, the course effectively taught me the key elements in Biblical events and Church history. In addition to learning about the Christian faith and what God has to offer to me, I was introduced to the most important major events in church history that made an impact on Christianity today from Luther’s Ninety-Five Thesis that sparked the Revolution to John and Charles Wesley’s conversion. The course emphasized the impact of these events and how it has shaped Christianity to become what it is today. The widespread use of technology has led to some important use health concerns. Some of the move common physical health risks are repetitive strain injuries, computer vision syndrome, and muscular pain. These injuries are on the rise for users of technology. A repetitive strain injury (RSI) is an injury or disorder of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Technology-related RSIs include tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon due to repeated motion or stress on that tendon. CTS is inflammation of the nerve that connects the forearm to the palm. Repeated or forceful bending of the wrist can cause tendonitis or CTS of the wrist. If untreated, these disorders can lead to permanent physical damage. Computer vision syndrome (CVS) affects eyesight. Unfortunately, the growing demand of Ford Pinto car model was hit hard due to an accident that happened on 1972 May. On this day, Lily Gray and a thirteen years old boy Richard Grimshaw were travelling in a Ford Pinto car when they were hit from the back by another car that was at a speed of 30miles per hour. Unfortunately, the impact caused an ignition of fire that killed Lily and caused serious burns on Richard. Consequently, a legal case was brought before the trial court by the Grimshaw family popularly known as Grimshaw vs. Ford Motor Company civil case to seek for compensation of the death and injuries suffered by Lily and Richard respectively (Leggett, 1999). The California law court found the defendant guilty of the death and injuries suffered by the victims. Thus, the defendant was instructed to award $560,000 and $2.5 million to Gray family and Grimshaw respectively. Furthermore, the court ordered the defendant to pay $125 million for punitive damages.
